Well done Charlie!
Surprising, the similarities between investing and sport
Charlie Lee won the English Squash Open 3 times, then set for international success, he
fell victim to post-viral chronic fatigue syndrome.
It was the start of a difficult journey as dreams turned to disappointment and sponsors
quietly melted away. He was just 20 years old.
I watched Charlie grind his way his way back to fitness and form; and while we amateur
players could only marvel at his skill, the root cause of one nagging problem was clear
…a fear of failure, not his fault, but failure, nonetheless.
Every investor knows that failure is inevitable at some point; it hurts, and the mere fear of
it can breed hesitation, low confidence, and unhappiness. The nemesis of good investing.
The best investors find a way to balance this eternal battle between personal happiness
and the pursuit of perfection. There is no perfect way and what Charlie needed was time
and space.
So, like buying a great stock on a rainy day, in December 2020 Eriswell joined this young
athlete’s last remaining sponsor; then did very little else other than offer soft support.
It’s hard to put into words the feeling when Charlie raised his arms in Guatemala last
Saturday having won his first Squash PSA World Tour event!
He had found a way, his way.
Strange how similar investing and sport can be, and how learning from failure can drive
future success.
Dreams, disappointment, dedication
Now the magic!
